The 2025 Wake was a very special occasion. October 2025 marked the 70th anniversary of Bill Cowley’s inaugural Lyke Wake crossing.
As such we have enjoyed a fair amount of publicity around this anniversary, including this BBC article.
We were delighted to host the event in the iconic The Lion Inn, Blakey Ridge. If ever there was a venue close to the heart of many a Dirger, then The Lion is that place.

The weekend of the Wake was punctuated by the presence of Storm Amy. Given the exposed location of The Lion, it meant the roaring fires and thick stone walls made this a wonderfully cosy safe haven.
We had a great turnout, and a number of degrees were awarded. It was wonderful to see Sally and Graeme progressing to a Doctorate just 18 months since their previous degree. Condolences go to:
Graeme Noble – Doctor of Dolefulness
Sally Parkin – Doctor of Dolefulness
Nikki Carr Wells – Mistress of Misery
Kathy Finkel – Mistress of Misery
Sally and Graeme produced some superb poetry and their degrees are well deserved.
We very much enjoyed the hospitality of The Lion – here are some photographic memories of the evening.
